In 1989 the drainage problems that led to the abandonment of the St.Leger meeting meant that the November Handicap was run at Thirsk on Saturday 11 November. On the same day the Mackeson Gold Cup was held at Cheltenham, and Windsor and Newcastle cards completed the day.
