The 1991 Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on Saturday 21 December 1991 was run in attritional winter ground and demanded stamina above all else. It produced a commanding winner in Carvill’s Hill, a powerful ex-Irish chaser trained by Martin Pipe and ridden by his long-time stable jockey Peter Scudamore.

From an early stage, Carvill’s Hill was positioned prominently, jumping soundly as Pipe’s trademark conditioning began to tell. Scudamore allowed him to bowl along in a relentless rhythm, never rushing but never giving his rivals respite. One by one, opponents came under pressure and dropped away, unable to live with the sustained gallop.

Turning for home, Scudamore asked his mount to stretch, and Carvill’s Hill responded with authority, powering clear up Chepstow’s unforgiving straight to win decisively. It was a brilliant performance built on stamina, toughness and tactical simplicity – a perfect illustration of the Pipe-Scudamore partnership at its most effective, putting a high class field of top staying chasers to the sword in brutal fashion.

Although expectations later ran high – particularly ahead of the controversial 1992 Cheltenham Gold Cup – Carvill’s Hill never quite repeated this peak. Yet his Welsh National remains a defining staying performance: a horse, trainer and jockey in complete harmony on one of jumping’s most demanding stages.
