The 1989 Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot showcased Desert Orchid at his electrifying, untouchable best. Already a folk hero for his white-grey flamboyance and fearless jumping, “Dessie” had spent most of his career proving he could win at any trip, in any ground, under any burden. But in the Victor Chandler, over a sharp, fast two miles, he produced a performance of breathtaking courage.

Trained by David Elsworth and ridden by Simon Sherwood, Desert Orchid tracked leader Panto Prince, to whom he was conceding 22lbs right from flagfall, attacking his fences with trademark exuberance. The early pace possibly contributing to the early exit of the quirky Vodkatini, who appeared to try and imitate Dessie’s incredible leap from almost outside the wings of the first open ditch..

Rounding the home turn, Brendan Powell looked the most likely winner on Panto Prince as Sherwood started to get busy on the grey while Long Engagement threw in the towel in third. Jumping the final fence it seemed that this was to be a heroic effort that would end in second place – but no – this was “Dessie”, and Simon Sherwood galvanised him to get up at the line

Many regard this as one of Desert Orchid’s greatest performances – a display of raw courage and brilliance that confirmed his versatility – cementing his reputation as one of the most remarkable chasers in National Hunt history.
