Why Going Behind?
Racing is full of headlines.
Yesterday’s winner.
Tomorrow’s declarations.
This week’s controversy.
But beneath every headline lies a deeper story.
Sometimes it is hidden in a century-old newspaper.
Sometimes it is found in forgotten statistics.
Sometimes it is a question no one has yet thought to ask.
Going Behind exists to explore those stories.
Because understanding where racing has been is often the best way to understand where it is going.
Going Behind explores the people, history and issues that shape British horse racing. Drawing on historical research and evidence, we look beyond the headlines to understand both the sport’s past and its future.
As the site has grown, so too has the work behind it. I now offer freelance research services for authors, historians, racing organisations, and curious individuals. For example, I can help you trace a racehorse you may have looked after, locate press reports, or find that racecard for that one-off winning bet from many years ago.
In short, if you’re looking for someone to go behind the headlines — I’m happy to help.

Testimonials
“I want to place on record my thanks to Steve for finding the answer to a question I posed. A 91 year old gentlemen, who was a good friend of my late father, claimed that as a 13 year old boy, he travelled from Bridlington to Beverley on his own to see Harry Wragg and Doug Smith ride. He said it was 1946. I promised to see if I could validate the story. I contacted Steve and within 48 hours he had produced the results from the meeting in May 1946, which confirmed both Harry Wragg and Doug Smith had ridden doubles! Many Thanks for a most impressive service.” Roger Elliott
