Suny Bay was a grey of immense stamina and heart, trained by Charlie Brooks and best remembered for his mighty weight-carrying performances in top staying handicaps. His breakthrough moment came in the 1997 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, a race that instantly entered jumping folklore thanks not only to his dominance, but to the sheer brilliance of jockey Graham Bradley.

Midway through the race, Suny Bay blundered badly, pitching Bradley up the horse’s neck and leaving him seemingly destined to be unseated. In a split second of instinct and athleticism, Bradley clung on, somehow righting himself in the saddle while keeping Suny Bay balanced and moving forward. It was one of the great recoveries ever seen in a major chase.

What followed was pure staying power. Regathered and back in a rhythm, Suny Bay ground his rivals into submission, his galloping relentless, his jumping – after the mistake – immaculate. He surged clear in the straight to win decisively, transforming what could have been a disaster into a heroic victory.

The 1997 Hennessy remains a defining performance for both horse and rider: Suny Bay’s toughness married to Bradley’s nerve, strength and unbelievable presence of mind. A true handicap classic.
